BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Police are searching for a suspect following a fatal shooting near the Coney Island Boardwalk that claimed the life of a 24-year-old man on Sunday morning, July 5, 2026.
According to the New York City Police Department (NYPD), officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 9:23 a.m. near the intersection of West 28th Street and Surf Avenue, just a short distance from the iconic Coney Island Boardwalk. Multiple 911 calls alerted authorities after nearby residents reported hearing several gunshots, with some initially mistaking the sounds for holiday fireworks.
When officers arrived, they found 24-year-old Truron Roachmartin, a resident of Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel provided life-saving treatment at the scene before transporting him to NYU Langone Hospital–Brooklyn. Despite the efforts of first responders and hospital staff, Roachmartin was later pronounced dead.
Investigators said the victim sustained gunshot wounds to the face and chest in what appears to have been a targeted attack. Authorities have not yet released information regarding a possible motive, and detectives continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
The suspect remains at large. According to witness accounts, the shooter is described as a male wearing a blue mask who fled the area on foot shortly after the shooting. Police said he was last seen heading east on West 28th Street toward Mermaid Avenue.
The NYPD’s 60th Precinct Detective Squad and the Homicide Bureau have launched a comprehensive investigation. Detectives established a security perimeter around the crime scene while forensic specialists collected evidence, including ballistic material, and canvassed nearby businesses and residences for surveillance footage that may assist in identifying the suspect.
Investigators are working to establish a timeline of events, interview witnesses, review security camera recordings, and determine whether the victim and suspect knew each other. Authorities have not announced any arrests, and the investigation remains active.
The deadly shooting comes amid heightened law enforcement efforts to combat violent crime in the Coney Island area. In recent weeks, prosecutors and police announced major operations targeting alleged gang activity connected to several violent incidents across the neighborhood. Officials have indicated that they are examining whether Sunday’s homicide has any connection to ongoing investigations, though no evidence has been publicly confirmed.
The shooting has unsettled residents and visitors in one of Brooklyn’s busiest waterfront neighborhoods, particularly during the busy summer season when the boardwalk attracts thousands of people each day. Increased police patrols remained in the area as detectives continued processing the scene and gathering evidence.
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the shooting or who may have captured dashcam or surveillance footage near Surf Avenue, West 28th Street, or Mermaid Avenue around the time of the incident to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers program. Police emphasized that all tips can be provided confidentially.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials say additional information will be released as detectives continue their efforts to identify and apprehend the suspect.
